CANON IC INFORMATION:
character name:
Rei Ryugazaki
canon & medium: Free!, anime
species & appearance: x
age: 16
world info: N/A
history: Rei started out not as a swimmer, but as a track club member. In fact, he had no intention of joining the swim club, stating that “swimming isn’t beautiful at all.” Nagisa hounded him daily regardless, because he’d decided that since Rei had a girl’s name, he OBVIOUSLY was meant to be part of the team.

Eventually, Rei saw Haru swimming, and decided he had been wrong. Swimming COULD be beautiful. So he relented and agreed to join the club – under the caveat that he didn’t have to swim. Of course, as they found out when they went to Samezuka’s pool for the first time… that was because Rei couldn’t swim. At all. In fact, he sank like a (very beautiful, really) stone.

Because he was a necessary member in order for the club to continue to function, and perhaps because he felt obligated, Rei agreed to learn swimming. He was determined to prove he could be as perfect and beautiful at it as anyone. … Which is fine, but reading books on the theory of swimming don’t really help in the everyday practicality of it. None of the strokes he tried worked; no matter what happened, it seemed Rei was destined to sink.

Then… he was talking to Haruka about it, and a butterfly landed on Haru’s nose. Because the butterfly stroke was the only stroke Rei hadn’t tried, Rei decided it had to be that.

As it turned out, that was true. Despite his complete inability to swim any other stroke, Rei could passably swim the butterfly. He needed a lot of help, including a very unbeautiful stint where he almost drowned in the sea and had to be saved by Makoto, a night in a creepy old lighthouse, and a lot of kickboarding, but by the time their first tournament rolled around, he was at least passable enough to help his team get to the relay finals.

During that time, he pulled the team together when they were upset about Rin – by giving up his spot on the relay for the redhead. Which, naturally, got them all disqualified, but it meant they got to solidify themselves and that Rei got to see what had been so special about the Iwatobi club! So it was all alright. Actually, it was all pretty stupid, but whatever.

Fast forward a year! Rei kept improving his stroke (which Rin had privately remarked on with disgust, incidentally) and though he still fell short of the others, the group symmetry they had made up for a lot of that. Because of the events at the tournament, they now practiced jointly with Samezuka on frequent occasions. And, thanks to their coach, they also had the reopening of the old swim club so they could swim even in winter!

There was a stint where Rei suspiciously disappeared, too, using really lame excuses (like, really lame) – which led to them thinking he was going to rejoin the track team after the track competition between all the teams… Which they then decided he had a secret girlfriend – or boyfriend – when he assured them that wasn’t the case. As it turned out, he was getting swimming lessons from Rin in the other strokes, and Rei was keeping it from them so he could surprise his club with the fact that he could now swim (very slowly) any stroke! They followed him, of course, so they already knew, and despite their odd reaction Rei somehow didn’t figure that out until they told him some time later.

He continues to provide a relatively rational line of thought (though certainly not as rational or motherly as Makoto) throughout the rest of that year – and though he makes no shortage of mistakes and he’s still slower than the rest of the club, he finds himself an important part of their group. By the time their finals roll around, there’s no doubt in his mind that he’ll continue to keep the swim club alive for his last year there at least.
powers: N/A, he’s just a swimmer, gosh
personality: Rei is at once a cool megane and a complete nerd. He’s obsessed with beauty, and believes that said beauty can be achieved as long as one follows the theoretical protocols and studies the technical aspect of things. It’s what drew him to the track team in the first place, and made him by far the most technically proper team member.

Unfortunately, his penchant for this level of technicality means that he’s not very good at things that are impulsive or feelings-based. It also means that his lack of feeling when he’s performing an act – for example, pole vaulting – that can be performed with sound technicality. He’s actually had this fact brought up. It isn’t the worst of points, but it’s one that Rei can’t seem to quite shake.

Obviously, once he’s settled on the fact that he’s going to do something, Rei is EXTREMELY dedicated. Early on, he’s seen mentally calculating the angles he should use for his pole vaulting, what speed he should approach at, when to leap for maximum lift and propulsion – whenever he’s in a rut, books on the subject are his go-to response. It’s pretty common to see him with a book in hand, but if you actually go into what he’s reading at any moment, books on theory are probably the most common of the lot. When he’s unsure how to proceed in getting better at swimming, he covertly goes to the library and picks up books on its theory. There’s a lot of indication that he’s read these particular books before, and that there’s nothing in them he doesn’t remember, but he rereads them anyway.

In some ways, Rei can be pretty insecure. When he joined the Iwatobi Swim Club, it was at Nagisa’s behest – and when he started swimming, that was good enough. However, when they had their first tournament and he saw Rin, things changed. When he saw the man he basically replaced on their team, and how strong Haru’s feelings were toward that man, he began to feel very secondary. It was something that grew as he talked with the others, learning how Rin had changed them, how they had seen ‘something’ when they were younger and they swam the relay with Rin himself. So, though he never actually mentioned it, he began to feel a little like a third wheel.

It wouldn’t be right to say that Rei isn’t observant and intuitive, too. The fact that he realised the source of the tension between his own team and Rin was related to Rin wanting to swim with his old friends is a huge point in that direction. He’s also very analytical when it comes to dealing with strife – he makes the suggestion that Nagisa should speak with his parents when Nagisa is afraid they’ll deny him swimming because of his grades, in addition to basically just telling Rin to swim with the Iwatobi boys – cutting straight to the heart of the matter. He’s not afraid to step aside if he feels it can help resolve an issue.

Related to his dedication, as well as his insecurity, Rei can be pretty stubborn. When everyone is struggling because of Rin’s flippancy regarding his old teammates, and when Rin himself is struggling with his actual feelings regarding them, it’s Rei who steps up to bring that up. He questions Rin on exactly what he’s doing, and refuses to back down even when the redhead gets right in his face – even when he’s grabbed by the collar and practically shaken.

That isn’t to say he’s not afraid of anything. In fact, Rei is afraid of a LOT of things. Amid the more predictable and understandable fears of things like failure, Rei is terrified of monsters. Ghosts, zombies, all kinds. When they’re all washed ashore on one of the far beaches on their training trip, the group at large gets stuck in an old, seemingly abandoned lighthouse. Naturally, it’s very dark and someone makes the suggestion that they should tell scary ghost stories. Rei doesn’t protest because he’s trying to be strong, but in reality, the only one more frightened than him in that situation was probably Makoto.

AUSLOSEN IC INFORMATION:
character name:
Rei Ryugazaki
appearance: Largely the same as canon, Rei is built slightly differently, as he lacks the musculature of being a swimmer. Instead, he’s built like a model – fit, but not overly-muscled. His attire is much more businesslike as well, except when he’s wearing his own designs.
age: 18
history: Rei was born into a decent family, a group of people with good living wages and a nicely upper-middle-class lifestyle. In fact, one might even say he had it good for where he grew up. With parents in manager positions at large firms and an older brother who was a successful financial consultant, he hardly had to want for anything.

Armed with a quality (as much as one can get quality on this level of Auslosen, that is) education, Rei found himself at a bit of a stand-still. He had all the analytical skills his parents possessed, but the idea of becoming a plain salaryman didn’t sit well with him. He wanted something more abstract, something… beautiful.

He turned to modeling, at first. It seemed natural – he wanted to be as beautiful as any one person could be, so by wearing beautiful clothing, he thought he could achieve that. It ended almost just as quickly.

Designers, after all, were a curious bunch with curious ideas. Not a single design he wore struck him as worthy of being on the runway. In fact, he wagered he could make better designs himself. It was with that in mind that he left modeling and turned to sewing – though he didn’t have any experience working with the machines, it didn’t take him long to master them. If there was anything Rei was, it was resourceful and a quick learner.

His reputation grew in part because he was almost forceful in his eccentricity. Rei, the butterfly designer. His affinity for the elusive insects was strangely strong, considering he had never seen one in person. He didn’t care about that fact at all. As he rose in the eyes of the design world, he learned more about the models who would be wearing his works.

Haruka Nanase was a name that flew around a lot. He was the ‘ideal’ model, in a lot of people’s eyes. When Rei saw him, he somehow felt like he understood why, despite his often undesirable personality. It became Rei’s ideal outcome to design for Haruka himself.

That, at least up to now, was a faraway dream. Rei found that Haruka was in a whole other league, with a team of people that seemed hellbent on keeping lower-born designers away from him. Without the necessary backing and clout, he couldn’t manage to so much as find a moment to speak with Haruka.

With that dream on the back burner, he turned to others. Rin Matsuoka became the next subject of Rei’s near-obsessive personality – the man couldn’t be more different from Haru, but that was in its own way almost intoxicating. At first, Rei wasn’t sure Rin would accept his designing either, but he was persistent enough to get him to agree.

Once the redhead left modeling, though, it was some time before Rei found him again – at a strip club, of all places. A strip club with completely unflattering clothing, of course. Rei himself had hit something of a rut in his designing – though his items were still being sold, he was running out of ground to keep moving forward. So, he made an appointment with Rin’s employers, and contracted himself to making the occasional costume for the club. He had the time, and they seemed to appreciate his eccentricities more than the bigwigs in modeling, so it seemed like a win-win situation. He would still say that’s true now, as he works on those commissions, as well as his own designer clothing, between modeling agency design gigs.
personality: Rei is largely the same as his canon counterpart. His eccentricities are more pronounced – particularly in his obsession with butterflies, even more than beauty itself. He’ll talk about anything he knows about them with whoever will listen, without fail.

Because he doesn’t have influences like Nagisa in Auslosen, he’s somewhat less open to direct friendship – his professional barrier is much thicker than it is by the end of his canon. In addition, he doesn’t know, directly, that he can and will yield under persistence far greater than his own.

He’s not nearly as good as his canon self at taking criticism, though. Because he’s got a very specific idea of what’s beautiful, and because his ideal is usually praised, he isn’t terribly humble. When someone has a complaint, whether the complaint is reasonable or not, he’s a lot more resistant to accepting that complaint as valid.
job: Fashion designer
fix: Butterflies. He will use them as a motif at any opportunity, and he’s obsessed with the idea of one day seeing a live one in person.

ROLEPLAY SAMPLES:

both samples need to take place within auslosen.

third person: Rei paused in his work to adjust his glasses and glance at the clock. Its harsh red LEDs read 02:47, with the little light next to the AM sign ticked on. Had he really been working for ten hours already? Sighing, he reached to rub the back of his neck and stretch, carefully avoiding jostling the fabric or the sewing machine he had been hunched over.

His eyes turned to the window, where a sickly, flickering stream of yellowish light was all that came between the outside world and complete darkness. How long had he been doing this? Spending hours on end working in front of the sewing machine, making alterations and executive design decisions on the fly? It had only been a few years, though it felt so natural that it seemed like forever.

On the corner table, a barely-nibbled salad sat, like a dejected ally. He’d gotten it some hours before, though he couldn’t remember now exactly what time that was. It was so wilted now that it had to have been fairly early on, he guessed. Wrinkling his nose in distaste, he pushed back his chair and got up to take care of the wasted food. It was regrettable, but not uncommon. When he got into his work, there was little that could break him from it.

It wasn’t until he’d made it halfway down the hall that a yawn took him, free hand rising to cover his mouth. No one was up at this time, he was sure, so he wanted to at least *try* to be quiet.

first person: These phones…

[The young man’s voice holds quite a lot of disdain in it, considering there’s no video. He sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose.]

They’re not at all beautiful, are they? Not even a little. I didn’t even want to accept mine. And this story so far? Kidnappings and mysterious clawed humans… not beautiful at all.
